This clinical risk alert from our lead clinical partner, TMLEP, explores the importance of pre-operative counselling of a STARR procedure. A STARR procedure is a stapled trans-anal resection of the rectum which is performed in patients with symptoms of obstructed defecation syndrome associated with internal rectal prolapse or rectocele. Prior to surgery conservative measures should be instituted and a proctogram should be undertaken to confirm internal prolapse.

This clinical risk alert from our lead clinical partner, TMLEP, covers the management of of Extravasation of Chemotherapy Agents. Extravasation is the leakage of fluids from a vein into the surrounding tissues and is a recognised complication of insertion of a cannula. Chemotherapy agents are cytotoxic in that they have anti-cancer activity, but also have the potential to cause tissue destruction if they extravasate into surrounding tissues when being administered.

Lumbar Surgery is surgery to the lumbar spine and adjacent levels including T12 and S1. Due to the extensive number of risks associated with such a significant procedure, it is important that appropriate follow up is provided to a patient who undertakes this.

In order to diagnose Septicaemia, the patient will require a full history and examination including blood tests to look for signs of infection, as well as an examination of Urea and Electrolytes to look at Kidney Function.

Symptoms may include pain in a specific bone with overlying redness, fever, and weakness. The long bones of the arms and legs are most commonly involved in children, while the feet, spine, and hips are most commonly involved in adults.
